Where Americans Are Moving

A Closer Look At America’s Migration Patterns

August 2023

Script

Americans are yearning for some Southern hospitality.

Every year, the U.S. Census Bureau releases data showing which states people are moving to — and which states they’re leaving. 2022’s results showed a clear regional trend.

The South had by far the largest growth, adding nearly 1.4 million new residents. Meanwhile, the biggest declines were in the Northeast, which lost nearly 220,000 people.

The states that gained the most residents:i

#5 — Arizona (+94,320)
#4 — Georgia (+124,847)
#3 — North Carolina (+133,088)
#2 — Florida (+416,754)
#1 — Texas (+470,708)

And the states that lost the most people:

#5 — Louisiana (-36,857)
#4 — Pennsylvania (-40,051)
#3 — Illinois (-104,437)
#2 — California (-113,649)
#1 — New York (-180,341)

Not every state is undergoing a dramatic population change.

America’s least changed state in the 2022 results was Vermont, where the population grew ... by 92 people.ii

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  1. With a population increase of nearly 500,000 people, Texas saw the largest increase in population from 2021-2022.
  2. New York lost over 180,000 residents from 2021-2022, the highest number in the nation.
  3. The South is the region of the country seeing the biggest population increases, while the biggest declines are happening in the Northeast.
